National Night Out, Irish Tunes and a Root Beer Float

Plus, doggy "yappy hour" and piano at Morrison House.

As bad as Mondays can be, yesterday was downright beautiful outside—enough so that spirits were lifted all across Old Town.

Let’s keep the momentum going with 5 Things for Tuesday, Aug. 6:

National Night Out — More than 35 block parties are being held throughout the city as part of National Night Out, an effort to promote citizen involvement in crime prevention (Check out the full list, including several events in the Old Town and Parker-Gray areas). Meet your neighbors, enjoy free food, music and games, and learn how you can get involved in your community and help make it safer.

National Root Beer Float Day — Slowly pour some root beer over vanilla ice cream in a dish. Serve with a straw or a spoon. Doesn’t get more American than that. Where and how are you celebrating?

A dog walks into a bar — Bring your pooch to Jackson 20 (480 King St.) at 5 p.m. for Doggie Yappy Hour, a tradition unlike any other.

Grand Irish tunes — Lift your pint and sing along with Pat Garvey, who will be playing Irish music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Murphy’s Grand Irish Pub (713 King St.) Brainstormer Pub Quiz runs from 4 to 9 p.m.

Piano man — Morrison House (116 S. Alfred St.) is hosting its Tuesday sing-along in its piano bar featuring Bob Smith and friends. Doors open at 6 p.m.
