New ACPS Superintendent: Dictator or President?

The search is on for a new Alexandria City Public Schools superintendent after Morton Sherman’s departure in August.

The School Board said it plans to hold a work session and public hearing in September to begin engaging the community on the issue.

When the School Board in late August accepted Sherman’s early retirement, Patch received many comments on the issue.

Here are some highlights:

“His successor should have more demolition experience than educational experience,” wrote dandaman606.

“Hopefully the next superintendent will make things better for Alexandria students and his/her salary will not be the same or higher then Mr. Sherman’s,” wrote Annabelle Fisher.

But others said it’s the community that needs to be more engaged.

“I am saddened – and frustrated – by the lack of parental involvement in the schools. At the elementary-school level, parents tend to be quite vocal…then they just sort of drop out of sight,” wrote BevHills Resident.

“We need great improvement in listening skills in this community,” wrote Alexandrian1987.
