Royal Birth: A Peculiar Alexandria Connection

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was in labor Monday morning as royal-loving Brits awaited word on the birth of a child who may one day sit on the throne.  

Alexandria may be 3,700 miles away from the royal birth, but the Duchess of Cambridge has already made an impact here—albeit a somewhat peculiar one.

In May, the city’s Planning Commission approved plans to raze the Royal Market convenience store and an adjacent shuttered laundromat in the 300 block of Royal Street in Old Town and replace them with a group of residential structures with a similarly regal name.   

The row of four, three-story townhomes will be named “The Middleton” in honor of the Duchess of Cambridge—born Kate Middleton—because of its location at the corner of Royal and Princess streets.

Perhaps the site of the soon-to-be-gone WMATA bus barn on Royal Street will be redeveloped and named after her child?

The baby's name will not be announced when its sex and birth weight are posted on a notice board at Buckingham Palace, according to CNN.com.
