We’re inching closer to the weekend, Old Towners. Here’s a look at what’s happening this Thursday, the first day of August.

Small business savvy — U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) is hosting an event designed for small business owners who want to learn more about navigating changes to health care law. The discussion, “Navigating the Affordable Care Act: Make Health Reform Work for Your Company,” takes place at Alexandria’s Landmark Mall in the community room, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Standup comedy — Actor-comedian Rondell Sheridan kicks off a weekend of standup shows at 8 tonight at the Old Town Theater (815 King St.). Tickets run between $22.50 and $27.50. Sheridan, who’s best know for his work on a pair of Disney Show sitcoms, will follow with two shows Friday and two shows on Saturday. Visit the Old Town Theater website for more information.

Learn to dance like Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy — Gadsby's Tavern is offering a fun and educational series of English country dance classes in preparation for the annual Jane Austen Ball on Saturday, Aug. 10. A class will be held 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, 134 North Royal St. There will also be a class Aug. 8. Reservations are requested. A dog walks into a bar — Bring your pooch to Jackson 20 (480 King St.) at 5 p.m. for Doggie Yappy Hour, a tradition unlike any other. 

Karaoke at Flying Fish — Have a tune you can actually carry? No? Well, how about one you at least can sort of carry? Signup beginning at 9:30 p.m. at Flying Fish (815 King St.).
