Another round of storms is possible in Northern Virginia on Thursday as oppressive heat and humidity settle over the Baltimore region, according to the latest forecasts.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for most of the state until 8 p.m. on Thursday. Temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-90s, with heat index values likely reaching 105 degrees.

"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses," NWS forecasters said. "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors."

While sunny skies are expected for most of the day, isolated pop-up storms are possible Thursday afternoon into the evening, according to The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.

"Temperatures remain in the 80s through the evening as any stray storms quickly die off," the Capital Weather Gang said. "Overnight lows only slip to the mid- to upper 70s."

Storm chances increase on Friday, especially south of D.C., and could also bring locally heavy downpours, forecasters said.

According to the Capital Weather Gang, a tropical weather pattern settled over the Mid-Atlantic is responsible for the back-to-back days of suffocating humidity and afternoon thunderstorms.

"The onslaught that began in June may not fade until early next week when humidity levels may ease slightly," forecasters wrote. "But, even then, it’s not clear if the change will be sustained."
