VIRGINIA — Storms and rain will start to move into Northern Virginia on Friday afternoon, setting up the state for a wet weekend filled with thunder and multiple rounds of showers, according to the latest forecasts.

A slow-moving cold front enters the state on Friday and is expected to spawn showers and thunderstorms, particularly west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the National Weather Service said in its latest forecast. Thunderstorm activity is expected to spread east and reach the Washington, D.C. area by evening.

A hazardous weather outlook is in effect for portions of Northern Virginia, including Loudoun and Prince William counties.

"An isolated severe thunderstorm or two is possible this afternoon into early this evening for areas west of Route 15," the NWS said.

According to forecasts, areas between Winchester and Leesburg could get wet between about 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., areas to the east of Leesburg, including the Beltway area, could see showers.

On Saturday, numerous showers and some thunder are expected to move through the region between about 4 a.m. and 2 p.m., the Capital Weather Gang said in its latest forecast. Showers will be spotty through the evening hours. Rain chances continue through Sunday.

"It will probably be dry more often than not, but we can’t rule out showers or thundershowers — possibly with heavy downpours — in the morning or afternoon," the Capital Weather Gang said.

Friday: Scattered thunderstorms after 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. South wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday Night: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 2am, then a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, then a chance of showers after 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Sunday: A chance of showers before 11am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11am and 2pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. East wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Sunday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 85.

Monday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
