3 In Critical Condition From Fiery Crash During Pursuit From Alexandria: State Police

The suspect vehicle struck a state trooper's vehicle and several other vehicles at different points during the pursuit.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Six people were injured during a pursuit involving a suspected stolen vehicle in the Alexandria area late Monday, according to Virginia State Police. A fiery crash resulted from the pursuit, leaving three juveniles in critical condition.

State police had responded around 11:19 p.m. to assist Alexandria Police with a suspected stolen Hyundai Elantra from Prince George's County, Maryland. The vehicle refused to stop for Alexandria Police, leading to a pursuit starting at Van Dorn Street.

The pursuit happened on Van Dorn Street, Telegraph Road, Route 236, and Route 1. State police joined the pursuit at Van Dorn Street and Vine Street at the Fairfax County border. Police say the vehicle rammed a Virginia State Police vehicle, causing the state trooper's vehicle to crash into a power pole and bring down wires on Route 1.

The suspect vehicle continued in Fairfax County and ran a red light at Route 1 and Fort Hunt Road. Police say the suspect vehicle struck a Chevy Silverado electric pickup truck and a Toyota Corolla before catching fire.

Troopers and two Fairfax County police officers on scene pulled the occupants from the suspect vehicle and began aid. One person was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital, and three others were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The driver and two passengers are in critical condition, and another is in stable condition. All four are juveniles.

The Silverado driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the Corolla occupants were not injured.

State police seized a stolen gun from the stolen vehicle driver.

The state trooper whose vehicle crashed into the power pole provided aid to the suspect vehicle occupants. The trooper later went to the hospital to be checked out for minor injuries and has been released.

The investigation into the pursuit by state police is ongoing. Charges are pending.
