A few things to do in the area the weekend of Jan. 4 - 6.
Where: George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate

Why Go: This is the last full weekend to enjoy holiday decorations, chocolate-making demonstrations, 18th century dancing and more. Bring the kids for their chance to meet Aladdin the camel.

Special Exhibition: A Thomas Nast Christmas: The Civil War in Political Cartoons
Where: Lee-Fendall House Museum & Gardens at 614 Oronoco St.
When: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; 1 – 3 p.m. Sunday now through Jan. 15.
Why Go: This exhibit includes some of Nast’s best and most famous holiday images from a time of difficulty for the nation.
Price: Admission is free with museum admission: $5 for adults, $3 children
Where: Del Ray Artisans, 2704 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria
When: The art exhibit opens Friday, Jan. 4 and continues through Jan. 27. (Noon – 6 p.m. Thursday, noon – 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday; noon – 6 p.m. Sunday.) The opening reception is Friday, Jan. 4 from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. and it is open to the public.
Why Go: Look at the signature color of winter in a whole new light.
Price: FREE
Washington Jewish Film Festival
Where: 14 different locations in DC.
When: Jan. 3 – 13.
Why Go: According to the organization, “The Washington Jewish Film Festival is one of the world’s oldest and largest Jewish film festivals, offering a contemporary mix of narrative films and documentaries.”
Price: $11 per screening. $75 for a Festival Pass; $30 if you're under 30.
When: 6 p.m. Saturday
Where: Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center.
Why Go: Take in a free performance and then expansive views of Georgetown and the Potomac River from the Kennedy Center balcony. The group performs standard jazz tunes in a swing jazz format based on the small bands of the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s.
Price: FREE
Where: Mount Vernon RECenter, Alexandria
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday (see website for complete schedule).
Why Go: Skaters of all ages and abilities are invited to take advantage of public skating sessions. Skate rental is an additional $3.
Price: Adults $6.50 to $7.25; Seniors $4.70 to $7.25; Ages 5 to 18 $5.40 to $7.25; Family $15.50 to $21.
Where: The outdoor ice rink at Pentagon Row, 1201 S. Joyce St., Arlington
When: Daily through March 18; see the website for hours and more information.
Why Go: This is the closest and one of the better known outdoor skating options in the area. You can skate and then warm up at one of the local restaurants or bars.
Price: $8 for adults; $7 for children (under 12) and seniors (over 55); $3 skate rental.
