What's Open, Closed For New Year's 2025 In Alexandria

As 2025 begins, there will be various closures and schedule changes for the New Year's holiday in Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — After closures during the Christmas holiday, residents will get more a week later as they count down to 2025. Alexandria will celebrate with First Night Alexandria and other events.

This year, New Year's Day falls on Wednesday, Jan. 1 and may result in holiday closures and schedule changes on Dec. 31 as well. In Alexandria, schools continue to be closed for the extended winter break. Local government offices and some other services will be closed for several days.

Here are all the openings and closings to know around Alexandria for New Year's Eve on Dec. 31 and New Year's Day on Jan. 1.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Jan. 1.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed from Dec. 23 to Jan. 3.

ABC Stores: Virginia ABC stores typically close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with adoptions beginning at noon on Dec. 31. Closed on Jan. 1. For animal emergency or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.

Courts: Alexandria courts are closed Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

DASH Bus: DASH Bus will have normal operations on Dec. 31 and operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. Jan. 1. Alexandria Transit Company administrative offices will be closed on Jan. 1. The free King Street Trolley operates from King Street Metro to City Hall/Market Square with service every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV locations will be closed on Jan. 1.

Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School will be open 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.

Historic Alexandria facilities: Friendship Firehouse Museum will be open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, and all city museums are closed on Jan. 1. Freedom House is open weekends only through early January.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Ice & Lights: The Winter Village: Open daily, including holidays, through Jan. 5.

Impound lot: Closed on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Libraries: Alexandria Library locations will be close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on Jan. 1.

Metro: Metro's shutdown of some downtown stations will end on Dec. 31. Metrorail's regular weekday service will be offered on Dec. 31 from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. with free fares after 8 p.m. Reduced Sunday service will be offered from 7 a.m. to midnight on Jan. 1.

Parking: On Jan. 1, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 1.

Recreation, nature and art centers: Minnie Howard Aquatics Facility will close at 3 p.m. on Dec. 31, and all recreation, nature and art centers will be closed on Jan. 1. The Torpedo Factory Art Center is closed on Jan. 1.

Trash and recycling: City trash collection will be delayed by one day starting Jan. 1. For private trash collection services schedule changes, contact your hauler.

Virginia Railway Express: Running on an S schedule on Dec. 31 and closed on Jan. 1.
