What's Open, Closed For Thanksgiving 2024 In Alexandria

The Thanksgiving holiday will result in various closures around Alexandria, and some services will remain closed Friday.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday, Nov. 28 this year, bringing a holiday break for students and employees.

Government offices, schools and some businesses will close for the holiday observance. Many government offices and services will also be closed on Friday, Nov. 29 for Black Friday, making it a four-day weekend.

One thing Alexandrians look forward to on Thanksgiving morning is the annual Alexandria Turkey Trot. The race draws some of the East Coast's top elite runners to run the flat, USATF-certified course. This year's event will happen at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 28 with "America's Fastest Teacher" Susanna Sullivan as grand marshal.

Here are all the openings and closings to know around Alexandria for Thanksgiving on Nov. 28 and Black Friday on Nov. 29.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Nov. 28 and Nov. 29.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed on Nov. 27 to 29.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: Closed on Nov. 28 and open on Nov. 29 with adoptions starting at 12 p.m. For an animal emergency or wildlife concern, call 703-746-4444.

Courts: Alexandria Circuit Court, Clerk of Circuit Court, General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, and Court Services Unit close at noon on Nov. 27 and are closed on Nov. 28 and 29.

Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers in Virginia will be closed on Nov. 28 to 30.

Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center at Alexandria City High School will close at 1 p.m. on Nov. 27 and be closed on Nov. 28 and 29.

Historic sites and museums: All city museums are closed on Nov. 28. On Nov. 29, the Alexandria Black History Museum will be closed, and all other museums are open normally. Freedom House is only open on weekends through January.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: Closed on Nov. 28 and 29. The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays. Fees will continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Libraries: Alexandria Law Library will close at noon on Nov. 27, and all Alexandria Library locations will be closed on Nov. 28 and 29.

Metro: On Nov. 28, Metrorail will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight. It will be on a reduced Sunday schedule at all stations. Metrobus will run on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess customers may make a reservation to travel on the holiday, but subscription trips will be canceled.

Parking: On Nov. 28, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced. Normal restrictions will be enforced on Nov. 29.

Post offices: Closed on Nov. 28.

Recreation, nature and art centers: Closed on Nov. 28. On Nov. 29, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, and Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center, and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and others will be closed. Torpedo Factory Art Center is closed on Nov. 28 and open normally on Nov. 29.

Trash and recycling: Residential trash, recycling, and yard waste will be collected on the regularly scheduled day during the week of Nov. 25. Trash pickup will begin at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 28. Curbside food waste will be delayed by one day. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will be open on Nov. 30. For private trash collection services schedule changes, contact your hauler.

Virginia ABC: Virginia ABC stores will be closed on Nov. 28 and reopen for regular service on Nov. 29.

Virginia Railway Express: Closed on Nov. 28 and running on an S schedule on Nov. 29.
