What's Open, Closed For Thanksgiving 2025 In Alexandria

The Thanksgiving holiday will prompt closures around Alexandria and the returning tradition of the Alexandria Turkey Trot.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Thanksgiving Day falls on Thursday, Nov. 27 this year, bringing a holiday break for students and employees.

Government offices, schools and some businesses will close for the holiday observance. Many government offices and services will also be closed on Friday, Nov. 28 for Black Friday, making it a four-day weekend.

One returning tradition for Alexandrians is the annual Alexandria Turkey Trot held on Thanksgiving morning. The race draws some of the East Coast's top elite runners to run the flat, USATF-certified course. This year's event will happen at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 27 in the Del Ray neighborhood. Donations to ALIVE! are encouraged for race participants and spectators.

Here are all the openings and closings to know around Alexandria for Thanksgiving on Nov. 27 and Black Friday on Nov. 28.

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28.

Alexandria City Public Schools: ACPS schools and offices are closed Nov. 26 to 28.

Courts: The General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Court Service Unit, Circuit Court, and the Clerk of Circuit Court will close at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 26 and remain closed Nov. 27 and 28.

DMV: Virginia DMV locations will be closed Nov. 27 to 29. Some services are online at dmv.virginia.gov.

Health department: The Alexandria Health Department, Flora Krause Casey Health Center, and the Teen Wellness Center will close at noon on Nov. 26 and be closed on Nov. 27 and 28.

Historic sites and museums: All Historic Alexandria museums are closed on Nov. 27. On Nov. 28, the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, the Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum, the Fort Ward Museum, the Freedom House Museum, Gadsby's Tavern Museum, and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All other Historic Alexandria museums will be closed.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the Child Protective Services Hotline at 703-746-5800; the Domestic Violence Hotline at 703-746-4911; the Emergency Mental Health Services or substance use crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the Adult Protective Services hotline at 703-746-5778 or 988; and the Sexual Assault Hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: Closed on Nov. 27 and 28. The city’s impound lot is closed on all weekends and observed city holidays. Fees continue to accrue on Saturday and Sunday, but not on holidays.

Library: Alexandria Library locations will close at 12 p.m. on Nov. 26 and be closed on Nov. 27 and 28.

Metro: On Nov. 27, Metrorail will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight on a special reduced holiday service schedule at all stations. Metrobus will run on a Sunday schedule. All MetroAccess subscription trips will be canceled, but customers can make a separate reservation to travel on the holiday.

Parking: On Nov. 27 and 28, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts. The suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any normally prohibited location. Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced.

Post offices: Closed on Nov. 27.

Recreation, nature and art centers: All facilities will be closed on Nov. 27. On Nov. 28, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility, Charles Houston Recreation Center, and Patrick Henry Recreation Center will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All other City of Alexandria recreation facilities and nature centers will be closed. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be closed on Nov. 27 and open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 28.

Trash and recycling: Trash, recycling, and yard waste collections will follow the normal collection service schedule. However, curbside food waste collection will not be collected on Nov. 27. Collection of curbside food waste will slide by one day for the remainder of the week. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center will open on a normal scheduled on Nov. 29.

Virginia ABC: Virginia ABC stores will be closed on Nov. 27 and reopen for regular service on Nov. 28. Stores will open early at 8 a.m. on Nov. 28 and close at regular times.

Virginia Railway Express: There will be no VRE service on Nov. 27 and 28. Regular service will resume on Dec. 1.
