RESTON, VA -- For those who were hoping to hop into one of Reston's 15 outdoor pools this weekend to cool off, there's bad news: nearly half of them will be closed for all or part of the weekend ahead.

Multiple pools were closed during the Memorial Day weekend due to not enough lifeguards as well as vandalism in one instance. Those problems haven't been fully rectified yet, and as a result two pools will be closed the entire weekend and five will be closed on either Saturday or Sunday.

Here's the full list, according to the Reston Association:

Glade, Hunters Woods, Lake Newport, Lake Thoreau, North Hills, North Shore, Ridge Heights, and Uplands will be open the entire weekend.

“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the closing of some pools last weekend,” said the association’s CEO, Hank Lynch, in a statement. “Like many community and recreational associations in our area, RA is trying to meet the challenge of hiring staff for various summertime positions. With the unanticipated shortage of lifeguards creating a potential safety issue, we felt the most prudent thing to do was to close some pools and invite folks, through our social media channels, to visit one of our several other pools that remained open through the weekend.”

RA will hold two job fairs to recruit more lifeguards for the 2019 season. One was held on Thursday at Newbridge Pool, and the next will be held at 4 p.m. June 13 at Lake Newport Pool.

"Traditionally, the association has hired high school and college students to staff its pools," the statement adds. "RA adjusts its seasonal pool schedule to coincide with the availability of students who are off from school."
