FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County police on Monday announced the launch of this year's Road Shark campaign, an annual effort to deter aggressive driving and reduce crashes on county roads.

First introduced in 1999, the Road Shark program was implemented in response to the rising number of traffic crashes and reckless driving behaviors, police said. Over the years, police said the initiative has led to improvements in road safety through targeted enforcement and public education.

Last year, police issued nearly 35,000 citations and warnings across five enforcement waves. More than 24,000 were issued in 2023.

1. High-Visibility Enforcement

FCPD officers and Virginia State Troopers will conduct targeted enforcement in key areas identified through traffic data analysis. Officers will be on the lookout for violations such as:

  • Aggressive driving
  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • School zone violations
  • Driving under the influence (DUI)

2. Community Engagement and Education

FCPD will actively engage with the community through educational events, social media outreach and direct communication to encourage safe driving habits.

3. Data-Informed Decision Making

By analyzing data and identifying high-risk areas, FCPD will target enforcement efforts where they’re needed most. This approach ensures that resources are used effectively to reduce crash rates and improve overall road safety.
