New Reston Planning Commissioner Appointed

John Carter has been appointed the new Hunter Mill District Planning Commissioner, the Board of Supervisors announced.

RESTON, VA -- Reston has a new planning commissioner to replace Frank de la Fe, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has announced.

Supervisor Cathy Hudgins announced that John Carter would replace de la Fe as the Hunter Mill District Planning Commissioner.

"Mr. Carter holds a Master of Planning degree from the University of Virginia; a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor of Architecture with Distinction from Arizona State University," the statement reads. "Mr. Carter has over 35 years of experience as a planner, urban designer and architect. He is a former Chief of Community-Based Planning in Montgomery County, and was responsible for overseeing the master plan and the development review processes for the largest geographic areas in Montgomery County. He has received numerous honors and awards over his career."

He has lived in the Hunter Mill District for 44 years, making him an "excellent choice" for the position, Hudgins added.

Carter takes over at a difficult time for Reston, as controversy over development in the area has led to some heated community meetings. One of the largest issues he'll have to grapple with is local angst over a plan to increase the density limit in Reston, which would encourage more development in the area.
