RA: No Electronic Cigarettes on RA Property, Either

Board votes to add e-cigarettes to growing smoking rules.

Reston Association's Board of Directors voted on Thursday to ban electronic cigarettes from RA common areas.

The ban is an amendment of RA's already wide no-smoking zone. In March, the board voted to extend the no-smoking rules from within 25 feet of an RA area to 50 feet.  Smoking is not banned on the RA Paths, but it is "strongly discouraged," according to the wider no-smoking rule passed in March.

Smoking is prohibited within all RA community buildings, pool facilities, tennis courts, picnic pavilions, ball fields, multipurpose courts, garden plots and tot lots and in the 50 feet nearby, though the directors have admitted there probably is not an effective way to enforce this.

E-cigarettes are have gained in popularity in recent years.  They deliver nicotine via atomizer. While the smoke is generally less noticeable to people nearby, e-cigarettes still have health risks, says the Mayo Clinic.

Also on Thursday, the board voted to add 11101 Chessington Place, Reston, VA, 20194 into the Reston Association. That is a home purchased by at-large director Donna Rostant. The home is not a part of Reston Association, but was added under an RA provision that says a homeowner may choose to add their home to the association.
