Remembering MLK, Char-a-oke and Get to Know New FCPS Leader

Five things to know for Thursday, Aug. 29.

Did you go to the Let Freedom Ring Commemoration and Call to Action event at the Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday? Feel free to share your thoughts and photos with your Reston neighbors. Post them in our BOARDS section.

Start thinking long weekend - It's almost Labor Day weekend! What do you have planned? Lots going on, including Lake Anne Jazz Festival, Porsche Car Club Show at Reston Town Center all day Saturday, and general Back-to-School mayhem.

Speaking of schools - Want to get to know more about Karen Garza, Fairfax County Public Schools’ new superintendent? Check out this video interview with her that appeared recently on FCPS Cable TV. You can also see other videos on subjects like the district’s budget, and more.

Singing of schools - Thursday is Fairfax County Public Schools’ third annual charitable karaoke fundraiser, known as “Char-a-oke.” Locals are invited to build employee engagement by putting together a team to belt out your favorite karaoke song, or attend as a guest for great networking and delicious catering from Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

Proceeds benefit the Education Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools. Entrants compete for trophies like Best Vocals, Best Rendition, Crowd Favorite and Most Spirited. Raffle tickets are also available for $20 each, and can win you a five-night stay at any Hilton hotel worldwide. Tickets range from $75 for a single spectator to $1,000 for a team package with extra perks. It all takes place at the Barns at Wolf Trap, in Vienna. Click here to visit the website for more information or to register.
