RESTON, VA -- If you were disappointed by the closure of some Reston pools during the Memorial Day weekend, a staffing shortage and vandalism may be to blame.

The Reston Association released a statement saying that they were "working to address issues" that resulted in pool closures, most of which were related to a shortage of lifeguards to staff all 15 outdoor pools under the RA's purview.

Some lifeguards called in sick, and there were additional problems "related to equipment failures and vandalism," RA stated.

"All aquatics facilities, except Lake Thoreau pool, are expected to be open as scheduled today through Friday," the statement adds. "Lake Thoreau pool is being inspected for broken glass after the facility was vandalized prior to the holiday weekend."

RA plans to hold two job fairs in hopes of recruiting more lifeguards for the 2019 season, holding one at 6 p.m. on May 30 and another at 4 p.m. on June 13. They will be at Newbridge Pool and Lake Newport Pool, respectively.

"Traditionally, the association has hired high school and college students to staff its pools. RA adjusts its seasonal pool schedule to coincide with the availability of students who are off from school," the statement reads.
