SLHS To Break Ground on Turf in Early June

South Lakes High School will have two synthetic turf fields in time for fall sports, school says.

South Lakes High School is set to break ground on two synthetic turf fields the first week in June, said SLHS student activities director Linda Jones.

Jones confirmed on Friday the money is finally in place for the project, which has been discussed for more than a year and then was in jeopardy this spring when several partners lowered their financial commitment and had issue with the Memorandum of Understanding.

South Lakes, along with several community partners, will install turf, which will give high school and community athletes more playing time with fewer weather cancellations, on the stadium field as well as on the practice field.

The project is expected to cost between $1.4 and $1.8 million.

The fields are a partnership with several community organizations, including a $175,000 grant from Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services; $1.1 million in bond money from the Fairfax County Park Authority;  $25,000 from Reston Youth Association (football); $30,000 from South Lakes High School discretionary funds; $150,000 from Reston Soccer; and $100,000 from Reston Community Center.

The SLHS Athletic Boosters raised $23,000 in a recent fundraising campaign and  in order to make the fields a reality, said Boosters President Ron Parisi.
