Doris E. Ross

Doris E. Ross, age 99, a lifelong resident of Joliet, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022 with her loving daughter by her side, at Senior Star at Weber Place, where she has made her home since 2016.

Born January 30, 1923 in Joliet, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Adeline (Price) Cox. Doris was the youngest of seven children and was preceded in death by her siblings, Harold Cox, Edna Planeta, Edward Cox, Melba Jones, Harry Cox and Jack Cox. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Ross, in 1977.

Doris worked as a secretary in the Humanities Department at Joliet West High School for 18 years, retiring in 1987. After retiring, she volunteered at Villa Franciscan Nursing Home, Meals on Wheels, and the Encore Shop at Silver Cross Hospital. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Joliet since 1957.

Doris was an avid traveler who enjoyed many trips throughout the United States and Canada as well as to Europe. She was curious about the world and always eager to meet and get to know people from far and wide.

Doris was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne Ross of St. Cloud, MN and Jacqueline (Les) Phelps of Joliet; her granddaughter, Jennifer (Tony) Nowak of Oak Park, IL; three great-granddaughters, Hope, Hannah and Hailey Nowak, all of Oak Park; and a niece, Sheri (Ron) Mcgavic of Richmond, VA. Doris delighted in all her girls’ activities and achievements and was so proud of each of them.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bhavesh Gandhi, the staff, nurses and care partners at Senior Star of Romeoville, and Transitions Hospice for the kindness and care shown to their loved one.

Funeral services for Doris Ross will be held Friday, February 25, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet, where visitation will begin one hour prior to services at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.
