AAAHC Accredits Southwest Virginia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Roanoke Practice Also Receives Centers of Excellence Designation

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) has accredited Southwest Virginia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – an oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) practice located in Roanoke, Virginia. The recognized leader in ambulatory health care accreditation, the AAAHC has accredited more than 6,700 organizations since its establishment in 1979, and only a fraction of those have been OMS practices.
“The AAAHC has long been recognized as an authority on and advocate for quantifying high-quality health care and patient safety, which are extremely important to us,” said Samuel E. Scroggins, DMD, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon with Southwest Virginia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. “Exceptional patient care and safety has always been our top priority, and it’s gratifying to be recognized by the AAAHC for that.”
The AAAHC engages a wide range of ambulatory health care experts to develop, review and revise standards of high-quality health care and patient safety. In addition, it assesses organizations against these standards, as well as their own policies and procedures; and it creates tools to measure and support continuous quality improvement.

The AAAHC accreditation also designates the practice as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Center of Excellence. Created by U.S. Oral Surgery Management (USOSM) in July 2023, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centers of Excellence program is the first of its kind within the OMS specialty. It recognizes USOSM partner practices that consistently deliver superior patient care and clinical excellence.
In addition, the program encourages those characteristics in other practices and spurs additional practice growth. Southwest Virginia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the first USOSM practice to complete the Centers of Excellence program.

“Centers of excellence signify exceptional quality, particularly when it comes to patient care and safety. These are guiding principles for USOSM and our surgeon partners,” said USOSM President and CEO Richard Hall. “The AAAHC accreditation and centers of excellence designation are a testament to the Southwest Virginia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery team for their hard work and unwavering dedication to these ideals.”
Southwest Virginia Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is known throughout the region as an expert provider of oral surgery and facial trauma services, including emergency care. Led by Dr. Scroggins, the practice offers a wide variety of OMS procedures and treatments, from dental implants to tooth extractions, facial trauma treatment, bone grafting, wisdom teeth removal and more.
Dr. Scroggins has been in private practice in Virginia since 2014. He is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon – the highest credential that can be obtained in the specialty, according to the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
