Here are the top stories in Roanoke today:
- Flu season continues to impact local schools with the entire Craig County school district announcing that it was closed Monday due to the level of staff illnesses. That means that students will not report to school until tomorrow since schools are also closed for Election Day. Craig County school officials said the buildings and other facilities will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized during the down time. (WDBJ)
- Roanoke City police officers working downtown overnight on Friday/Saturday heard a gunshot shortly before 1 a.m. and observed a large group of people leaving a parking lot in the 100 block of Campbell Avenue SE. Officers responded to the scene to find a man lying on the ground with what they believed to be a critical gunshot wound and immediately began first aid procedures and crowd control due to the sizable gathering beginning around the victim. Details about what led to the shooting are unknown at this time as the police are just beginning their investigation. (WFIR, RCPD Press Release)
- The Junior League of Roanoke Valley's popular Stocked Market will take place Nov. 11 through Nov. 13 at the Berglund Center. This will be the 34th Annual Stocked Market, which has been known to attract as many as 10,000 shoppers in the past and has raised over $3.5 million for the JLRV's mission. "We are excited to be back in full force! Last year was a phenomenal year in person after a year away due to the pandemic, and we can't wait to have another exceptional year with the 34th Annual Stocked Market," said JLRV President Jessica Beemer. This year more than 100 vendors have signed up to show off their wares in the Farmer's Market style event. (WSET)
- Angels of Assisi has announced that even though recent adoption events have been a success its animal shelter is still full to the brim so they will be holding a discount adoption event on Nov. 5. The event will take place from noon to 6 p.m. at the main AoA office on Campbell Avenue in downtown Roanoke. Adoption fees for the event have been lowered from the usual $100 fee to only $30! (WFXR)
- The Vinton Town Council welcomed several new employees at its most recent meeting on Nov. 1, including three new police officers who just completed training at Cardinal Criminal Justice Academy in Salem. Deputy Police Chief Tim Lawless introduced Officers Trinity Otey, Stephanie Walsh, and Daniel Valladarez. "We’d like to congratulate our three newest officers for graduating academy after 4 months of hard work and dedication. We’re glad to have you as part of our team," said a post on the department's Facebook page. (Vinton Messenger, VPD Facebook Page)
