Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:

  1. Though not yet certified, the results of the Nov. 8 election are largely in and offer few surprises for Roanokers. Democrats swept the City Council race with Luke Priddy, Joe Cobb, Vivian Sanchez-Jones, and Peter Volosin winning the four open seats. Priddy will take the place of jailed former councilman Robert Jeffrey Jr. and finish his term before running again for his own full term. In the 5th, 6th, and 9th congressional districts the incumbents — Cline, Good, and Griffin — all brought home the gold meaning a Republican sweep. (Dept. of Elections)
  2. The Hollins Volunteer Fire Department is being dissolved after a letter from Roanoke County Fire Chief Travis Griffith terminated the county's relationship with the volunteer organization. The move comes after Roanoke County Police and an internal auditor began an investigation into the organization's operations and handling of funds and requires members to return any county owned property such as radios, pagers, and turn-out gear. Roanoke County said the dissolution will have no effect on fire and rescue services in the Holins area, which are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by staff firefighters. (WDBJ)
  3. Three Salem police officers were injured in a chase with a suspect after a shots-fired call was issued in the 200 block of East Main Street in downtown Salem. The injuries occurred when two police cruisers crashed into each other while chasing Griffin Newman, 25, of Salem, who was fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. The chase led west on Main Street where officers lost Newman on Wildwood Road. The injured officers were taken to the hospital, treated, and released. Newman is still at large and wanted on several charges. (WFXR)
  4. Total Action for Progress in Roanoke has extended the deadline for people interested in volunteering for its Free Tax Clinic. The deadline was originally Tuesday, but with several vacancies still open the decision was made to extend it. The Tax Free Clinic helps low-income households file yearly tax returns free of charge. "Last year we were able to refund over a million dollars back into the community and that was through the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit. Just enabling families to receive those credits within 5 - 10 business days has a huge impact," said Teffany Henderson, TAP's financial services program director. (WDBJ)
