Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:

  1. The Park, a downtown Roanoke LGBTQ+ dance club, held a fundraising night to raise money for the victims of the Colorado nightclub shooting that killed five and injured dozens on Nov. 19 - 20 in Colorado Springs. The fundraiser featured 25 performers that ranged from drag and music to standup comedy and raised over $2,000, according to the club's social media post Monday morning. "It doesn’t matter if it’s three blocks away or 500 miles away, we’re all part of the same family," Joe Sachenbacher, The Park special events coordinator said. (WSLS)
  2. The Prevention Council of Roanoke, a nonprofit organization that seeks to be a resource for individuals and families navigating the complex issues of substance abuse, started out in 2001 as a program to educate students in Roanoke County schools about the dangers of drug use. Now, the organization has decided to change its name to The Partnership for Community Wellness and focus on what they're calling a more widespread, holistic approach to their mission including educating people about healthy habits, healthy minds, and healthy bodies. (WFIR)
  3. On Sunday, the Roanoke Police Department community RESET team joined members of the gun violence prevention organization Peacemakers in going door to door to in the Lincoln Terrace neighborhood to help foster connections and open up a dialogue with residents there. The Peacemakers organization trains people in conflict resolution and provides resources for families whose lives have been impacted by gun violence. "A lot of these individuals that are in these impoverished neighborhoods, they don’t hear about the resources that are available, they don’t have the transportation to get to the resources that are available — so sometimes you have to take it directly to the doorstep," said Peacemakers founder Shawn Hunter. In addition to visiting residents the group also tied ribbons to their homes in a show of solidarity. (WFXR)
  4. Southbound drivers (such as me and my daughter on our way to volleyball practice) were shocked and confused to find an entire section of Peters Creek Road SW closed on Sunday afternoon. The closure started at the intersection of Aerial Way and ended at the intersection of Brandon Avenue. Fire trucks could be seen over the horizon and traffic was turned around and redirected, meaning a long way around for some. Late Sunday authorities issued a statement saying a crash early on Sunday had caused damages to area infrastructure that could pose threats to drivers and that the section of road would remain closed until repairs could be made. (WSLS)
  5. Salem City councilman John Saunders asked for a recount of the Nov. 8 council election, the current results of which show he narrowly lost to fellow councilman Randy Foley by 11 votes. The request came on the last day to file such a petition before the certification of the results and will now go to three circuit court judges who will do a full recount of all the votes for the four candidates who ran. "I looked at this long and hard. I was encouraged by an awful lot of people who supported me, and I will fight for my seat and for Salem," Saunders said at a recent council meeting. Salem saw a sizable increase in voter turnout this election after moving their elections from May to November. (Salem Times Register)
