Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:

  1. Officials at Roanoke Stormwater Management have announced that Wiley Drive will be closed until further notice due to flooding. This is the second time the road has been closed this year with the first time being due to flooding from Hurricane Ian. The road runs along both sides of the Roanoke River starting near Roanoke Memorial Hospital and passing River's Edge Sports Complex before ending under the Main Street Bridge beside the Roanoke Skate Park. (WSLS)
  2. The National Weather Service has confirmed that despite numerous tornado warning in and around the valley on Friday no tornados actually touched down. Total rainfall for the Roanoke Valley was between 2.51 inches and 3.16 inches according to two area rain gauges. Phil Hysell with the National Weather Service said, "With these rainfall events that are associated with remains of tropical systems, you’ll get bands of rain. These bands of rain are oriented north to south. When the band moves north over your area, you’ll see intense rainfall rates, 2 inches per hour, and then once that band lifts, the rain will cease, and then you may have an hour break, and another band moves through. (Roanoke Times)
  3. The Center for Digital Government, a nationwide research and advisory institute focused on technology policy and best practices in state and local government, announced the winners of its 2022 Digital Cities Survey on Nov. 10 and the City of Roanoke placed 7th in its population category. "Constituents expect more from modern governments. Our Digital Cities survey winners have worked hard to keep the focus on the needs of the communities they serve while implementing technology to improve delivery and execution," said CDG Vice President Brian Cohen. (WFIR)
  4. The retail store formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, but now just Burlington, has opened its second location in the valley at Tanglewood Mall. The opening is part of a multi-year strategy by Roanoke County to revital the struggling shopping center with $60 million in funding for improving the surrounding roadways as well as new businesses and developments. "Tanglewood is a huge asset for the community, it’s our anchor in the 419 corridor, it’s our downtown here in Roanoke County,” said Jill Loope, Roanoke County's Economic Development Director. “Malls are going through transformation all over the country. They’re trying to find their way in communities where they serve." (WDBJ)
