Here are the top stories today in Roanoke:
- Roanoke City Police Chief Sam Roman gave an update on the most recent crime numbers to City Council at the meeting on Monday. Over 200 felony warrants and 400 misdemeanor warrants were sworn out in October, 31 firearms were confiscated, and multiple shootings have resulted in only two arrests with several still having no suspects. Roman cautioned that many of the cases are ongoing investigations and repeated a call for anyone with any information to come forward. (WSLS)
- Beloved local music venue 5 Points Music Sanctuary has announced that the building they have called home for many years is due to be sold in January 2023. To prevent the sale, they need to raise $300,000 by the end of November in order to purchase the building themselves. In addition to concerts, 5 Points is also a music therapy and hearing loss advocacy center and is offering a variety of corporate and individual sponsorships ranging from $500 - $25,000 that come with a list of benefits. - Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist, singer, and songwriter Lindsey Buckingham's concert at the Jefferson Center has been canceled along with several other North American tour dates around the country. The performer's Instagram indicated the cancellations were due to his ongoing health issues. The Jefferson Center said it would be processing refunds for purchased tickets automatically and that those should arrive within 10 business days. (Roanoke Times)
- The Mast General Store is partnering with Columbia Sportswear for its 17th Annual Share the Warmth campaign. The retail outlet will be collecting new and gently used winter coats as well as sweaters, lighter jackets, and blankets throughout the month of November. "We’re all guilty of it. We have a favorite jacket that we love and wear all the time, then we find a new favorite, but keep the old one, which seldom sees the outdoors. It just hangs in the closet when it could be serving someone else," said Ryan Robinson, Mast Store’s community relations manager. If you would like to make a donation you can do so by dropping it off at the store's downtown location. (WSET)
- Restoration Housing, a Roanoke area nonprofit dedicated to restoring historic homes in the Star City, has announced that they have just completed their sixth such project. A circa 1900 home in Southeast Roanoke's Belmont neighborhood that sat vacant for many years and in bad need of renovation has been remodeled into a two-family dwelling with most of the costs of the construction offset by the nonprofit's public and private partners. "We couldn’t have accomplished this project without the generous support of our public funders, and we are very grateful for their awareness of the need for more affordable housing in our community," said Executive Director Isabel Thornton.
