Here are the top three stories in Roanoke today:
- Roanoke Mayor Sherman discussed gun violence and Operation Bold Blue Line on Thursday, Oct. 20. Roanoke will partner with the governor and the attorney general to reduce gun violence by funding police departments. Casey Lewis, a communications specialist in Roanoke's city manager's office, said about 17 percent of the city's police department positions are vacant, and there is an 8 percent vacancy rate in the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office. - On Saturday, Oct. 22, the Branch Group, a construction company, hosted the inaugural Girls In Real Life (G.I.R.L.) construction event in Roanoke. The event gathered dozens of young girls ages five to 18 for a hands-on construction experience and to learn about opportunities in the construction field. (WFXR-TV)
- The Roanoke Police Department hosted a "Retiree Luncheon" on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Roanoke Police Academy. Retired officers and citizens gathered for food and camaraderie. The department said there was more than 2,100 years of service in one room. (ABC 13 News)
