Videos: Dangerous Flash Flooding Submerges Cars At Virginia Mall

CAVE SPRING, VA — Surreal video posted on social media shows muddy floodwaters submerging multiple cars in feet of water outside the Tanglewood Mall in Cave Spring. The National Weather Service in Blacksburg issued a flash flood warning for Roanoke and surrounding communities until 8:45 p.m. Thursday as remnants of Tropical Storm Michael inundated the region with torrential rains.

Emergency management officials reported seeing extreme flooding across the region with up to half a foot of rain falling in some areas. There were also numerous swift water rescues and evacuations.

Video posted by ABC 13 showed rising brown flood waters outside T.J. Maxx, about 3 miles south of Roanoke.

Water could be seen penetrating the entrance of the mall, and one one user compared the parking lot to a lake.

WSLS 10 posted video on YouTube of the Roanoke River flooding as well, even overtaking a bridge and carrying debris down stream.

Michael was expected to bring heavy rains to the state and move into the Commonwealth on Thursday night. Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency to prepare for possible flooding, along with damage from strong winds and possible tornadoes.

After laying waste to Florida — and leaving hundreds of thousands of residents in the dark — the system carved a path of destruction across central and southern Georgia, where hundreds of thousands more also lost power. At least two people were killed — one in each state — including an 11-year-old girl who died when debris fell onto her family's trailer.
