ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S ROANOKE RAISES $111,170 TO FIGHT ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

ROANOKE, VA, November 28, 2023 – Roanoke residents participated in this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s® at Wasena Park on September 30. Participants raised $111,170 to support the care, support and research programs of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Sharrone Turner participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer's for the first time and says it won't be her last."My grandmother, Katie, died in April after battling Alzheimer's for 10 years. I decided then that I wanted to do something in her memory, in her honor, and the walk seemed perfect. This was my first walk, and I was so excited to have some friends and family join me. This cause is very dear to me, and I hope to be involved each year going forward."

The top fundraising team was Chippy’s Chicas who raised $9,440. Leslie Magee started the team several years ago to honor and remember her husband Chip who she lost to younger onset Alzheimer’s disease.

“Thanks to many years of research funded in part by the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, there are now two medications that have earned FDA approval for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. While these medications are a monumental step in the right direction, there is still work to be done. This year, we are more hopeful and motivated than ever to continue spreading awareness and fundraising for this cause that is near and dear to our hearts”, said Magee.

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease – a leading cause of death in the United States. Additionally, more than 11 million family members and friends provide care to people living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. In Virginia alone, there are more than 150,000 people living with the disease and 354,000 caregivers.
