In my view, Black History Month recognizes the good and bad that has happened in American history. This month reminds us of what hard work, dedication, love, and passion can do to enact positive change in our country. I am eternally grateful to all the pioneers that have given their lives in the fight for equality so that others, like myself, can have opportunities.

Regarding the fire service, there have been many that have paved the way for people of color. My dad, Captain (ret) Vernon T. Corbin Sr., was hired by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) in 1980 and was one of a handful of African American’s working for the department. He endured struggles early on in his career dealing with racism and inequities in treatment. However, he did not let any of that stop him!

He soon rose through the ranks to be one of the most well-respected Captains and paramedics within the FCFRD. At least this is what I have been told regularly since entering the department in 2006!

My dad has always pushed my siblings and I to listen, read, evaluate a problem, and then come up with a solution. I think this is what has gotten me to where I currently sit in my career as an FCFRD Lieutenant.

Overall, reflecting on this Black History Month, I believe we have come a long way! There is still work to be done for the overall goal of equity and inclusion. In the FCFRD, we are on the right path with Fire Chief John Butler’s Equity and Inclusion Council that serves to continue moving the department forward.
