How Vienna Voted In Senate District 37, Commonwealth's Attorney Primary

VIENNA, VA — Tuesday's primary election in Virginia determined Democratic candidates moving on to the Nov. 7 general election for Fairfax County and state legislative races.

Vienna voters had several notable races on the ballot, including the Virginia Senate District 37 race between incumbent state Sen. Chap Petersen and challenger Saddam Salim. Salim was declared as the winner based on unofficial election results. With all but provisional ballots counted, Salim earned 53.84 percent of votes, while Petersen had 46.16 percent.

Another notable race was the reform-minded Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano facing a challenge from Ed Nuttall. Descano was declared the winner and earned 55.11 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results not including provisional ballots.

Other elections on the ballot in Fairfax County were Fairfax County Board of Supervisors chairman and Fairfax County sheriff. Voters in the Dranesville, Mason, Mount Vernon and Springfield districts also chose candidates for supervisor. Results will be official when certified by the state's electoral board in the coming days.

Below are the Vienna precinct-level results for the most competitive races: Virginia Senate District 37 and Fairfax County/Fairfax City commonwealth's attorney. In the Virginia Senate District 37 race, Petersen got more votes in seven Vienna area precincts while Salim won five precincts. In the commonwealth's attorney election, Nuttall won 12 Vienna area precincts while Descano won three.
