iPads in Gym Class? Idea Helps Stenwood Elementary Win $5,000
Vienna school one of three local groups to win money from Silver Diner's "Eat Well Do Well" program.

Vienna's Stenwood Elementary was one of three local schools to recently earn thousands of dollars in grants for healthy and wellness programs.
The school was selected among dozens of others through Silver Diner's "Eat Well Do Well" program, a "competition designed to promote physical activity and health education in elementary and middle schools."
Local schools submitted entries to the contest for a program that promotes physical activity or health-related curriculum, the company said.
Stenwood earned a $5,000 grant through the program for its use of iPads in Physical Education classes to help students video record each other while performing skills such as, gymnastics, general exercises like jumping jacks and push ups, throwing a ball and kicking a ball. The students are able to watch the skills in slow motion and correct their form through peer editing.
"We also use a program called Welnet, that enables students to keep track of their nutrition, hydration, and fitness hours by keeping logs online. The iPads are used in the PE classes for students to input info into their logs. The iPads are also used to modify or explain modified activities for our students with limited physical abilities," said Tammy Stoker, a teacher at Stenwood Elementary.
