Madison Grad James Triantos Selected In 2021 MLB Draft
The Chicago Cubs selected James Triantos, an infielder and pitcher who helped lead the Warhawks to a state championship.

VIENNA, VA — James Madison High School's own James Triantos was drafted 56th overall by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the MLB Draft.
His selection came after helping the Madison Warhawks varsity baseball team to the Class 6 boys baseball state championship on June 26. The team secured the championship with a 2-1 win over Colgan High School.
According to a news release from the Cubs, Triantos had a batting average over .700, 11 home runs, 27 RBIs, and 23 stolen bases. As a pitcher, he had a 1.18 Earned Run Average (ERA) and 62 strikeouts.

According to a MLB video, Triantos, 18, was expected to be drafted in the first five rounds. Triantos, whose hometown is McLean, is the highest draft pick from Madison High School since Jay Franklin going to the San Diego Padres in the first round of the 1971 draft.
Triantos was drafted as a third baseman but played as a short stop and pitcher in high school. He is known for his hitting, but it remains to be seen if he will remain stay in the third baseman position.

Madison baseball head coach Mark "Pudge" Gjormand tweeted in support of Triantos' selection in the draft. After the state championship win, the coach told Inside Nova Triantos is the top high school player in the state.

Although Triantos had committed to playing for the University of North Carolina, he told WDVM he now intends to sign with the Cubs.
Triantos isn't the only one in the region chosen in the MLB draft. Severna Park High School graduate and shortstop Jackson Merrill was selected in the first round, 27th overall by the San Diego Padres.
