Under first year head coach Danny Strebar, the James Madison Junior Varsity Softball team is off to a 5-2 start at the halfway mark of the 2025 season. After dropping two straight to begin the season to Yorktown High School and Wakefield High School the team has reeled off five straight wins.
Comprised of 14 freshman and sophomore players, seven of which played for several years together in the Vienna Girls Softball League, team chemistry and camaraderie amongst the team started in late February during tryouts and has only grown since then.
After a tough opening day loss to Yorktown, the Warhawk bats have been hot with a team batting average over .400 and a slugging percentage of .563 that includes 21 doubles and four triples. Leadoff hitter Alexis Peters is batting at a .731 clip with 12 RBI in twenty-six at bats and Campbell Walker is batting .524 with four extra base hits and 9 RBI. Tess Morrow and Maddie Chung are adding some power to the lineup with 11 RBI each and nine extra base hits between them. Alex Garrett and Sharon Lautz have been clutch in key situations contributing 8 and 7 RBI respectively in 18 at bats each. Over the last two games, Nina Babounakis is perfect at the plate with four hits in four at bats and Amaya Rosa has scored three runs on two hits in six plate appearances.

Through the first half of the season, Madison cannot be stopped on the base paths with 64 stolen bases; 17 by Peters and 13 each by Walker and Taelinn Jorgenson.
On the defensive side of the ball, Ali Gurganus has been the key link for the Warhawks having played third base, first base, and catcher over seven games leading to a fielding percentage of .929. As a team, Madison has six double plays, four by Jorgenson, and Walker has thrown out four runners from the catcher’s box.

From the pitching circle, Maddie Chung and Tess Morrow have started all seven games. In 25 1/3 innings, Morrow has 29 strikeouts and Chung has 25 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings. Carys Cerne has seen relief in two games giving up just one run.
