Fairfax County police also offered the following tips to keep belongings safe at local gyms:

  • Use strong, high-security locks: Avoid inexpensive or combination locks. This suspect has been known to use bolt cutters to break into lockers. Choose a heavy-duty lock made of hardened steel whenever possible.
  • Keep valuables minimal: Bring only what you need to work out. Leave wallets, jewelry, and large amounts of cash at home or secured in your vehicle’s trunk before entering the gym.
  • Stay alert in locker areas: Report anyone lingering near lockers, entering without gym attire, or appearing to tamper with locks. Notify gym staff or call police if something seems off.
  • Check your accounts frequently: Review your credit and debit card activity for unauthorized charges, especially after visiting a gym or public facility.
  • Set up transaction alerts: Many banks offer instant notifications for card use. These can help you catch fraudulent activity quickly.
  • Act fast if your belongings are stolen: Contact your bank or card issuer immediately to freeze your accounts, then report the theft to your local police department.
