Metro Considers Shutting Down Stations During Off-Peak Hours as Cost-Saving Measure
Vienna/GMU station among 20 stations being considered for shutdown during off-peak hours, according to Metro budget memo.
The DC Metro is considering closing 20 Metro stations during off-peak hours including weekends at stations with the lowest ridership, according to a finance memo from an Oct. 13 Metro meeting. One of those stations is in the Vienna area -- the Vienna Virginia Square/GMU stop.
Metro defined "off peak" as middays, evenings and weekends. The proposal was made as part of an array of ideas on how to close a $275 million shortfall with the Metro budget.
Of the 20 proposed stations, seven of them are in Northern Virginia. Besides the Vienna stop, the others in Virginia are the Eisenhower Avenue, Van Dorn Street, West Falls Church, McLean, Greensboro and Spring Hill /Tysons stops.
