Scott Rawson Sloan Awards Given In Greater Vienna Babe Ruth League

Four players received awards named for Scott Sloan, a Vienna baseball player who was killed in a crash in 1992.

VIENNA, VA — In Vienna, the legacy of baseball all-star Scott Sloan lives on through an award named in his honor. The latest Scott Rawson Sloan Award was given to four players in the Greater Vienna Babe Ruth Baseball League this past Saturday.

Sloan, a Vienna Little League and Vienna Babe Ruth League player, was killed with three friends in a crash at Leesburg Pike and Lewinsville Road in 1992. A member of three Babe Ruth League All-Star teams, the 16-year-old was expected to become the catcher on Madison High School's varsity team and drew interest from professional scouts, according to Greater Vienna Babe Ruth's website. A memorial fund started by Sloan's family after his death supports the award.

Starting in 1993, an award was given to players in his honor. Greater Vienna Babe Ruth gives the Scott Rawson Sloan Award to a 13-year-old, 14-year-old, 15-year-old and senior league player between 16 and 19. The award goes to players who demonstrate the qualities Sloan showed as a baseball player: love for the game of baseball; respect for other players, coaches, and umpires; leadership by example; and generously teaching and sharing with other players, according to Ron Gecan, the National League vice president for Greater Vienna Babe Ruth. Coaches are asked to nominate players, and there are around 30 entries each year for the award.
