VIENNA, VA — After a Vienna Little League team won the league's first regional championship since 1972, the team was honored with a plaque from Vienna's mayor Monday night. The same night, Town Council honored the late Bob Leggett, the Town Business Liaison Committee chairman who held other local roles such as Vienna Little League coach, and Leigh Kitcher, who helped plan the first Liberty Amendments Month.

In early August, the American 11's All Stars won the Tournament of State Champions in Wilson, North Carolina. The team was undefeated in the tournament, defeating Greenville Tar Heel Little League 2-1 in the championship game, Georgia in the semifinal, as well as Bridgeport Little League, Greenville Tar Heel Little League and Durham South Little League in pool games.

"They won the southeast region championship, the highest level you can ascend to at the 11-year-old level," said Mayor Linda Colbert at the meeting. "Vienna Little League has not had a southeast regional championship since 1972, the last and only Vienna team to play in Williamsport."

To honor the late Bob Leggett, his wife, Carol, and son, Chris, accepted a proclamation from Town Council. Leggett, who died in July at age 80, was the chairman of Vienna's Town Business Liaison Committee, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, former CIA employee and Vienna Little League and Vienna/McLean basketball coach.

Colbert said she met Leggett when she was on Town Council and he was on the Town Business Liaison Committee and immediately liked him.

"He became the chair of the [Town Business Liaison Committee] when I became mayor," said Colbert. "It was really special because he was leading that when I was leading the town. We had so many good conversations not just about the town, about businesses...but we also talked about baseball...we talked about his love of baseball and his goals for the Town of Vienna and baseball in the Town of Vienna."

Town Council also honored Leigh Kitcher for her role in the planning of the inaugural Liberty Amendments Month in 2021. Kitcher has also served in leadership roles on Historic Vienna, Inc., Ayr Hill Garden Club and National Capital Garden Club.
