Virginia Weather: Chance of Flurries on Windy, Cool Friday

STERLING, VA — The weekend will start out windy and cold on Friday, with a chance for flurries, according to the National Weather Service. And expect a cold New Year's Eve with a slight chance for showers as the ball drops.

Thursday afternoon is dark and dreary, but Thursday night should clear, with a low near freezing.

There's a chance of flurries Friday, but it will otherwise be mostly sunny, with a high near 41 degrees. The winds will increase through the day and could gust as high as 40 mph.

The skies clear Friday night, with the temperature dropping to the mid-20s. Saturday will be mostly sunny and warming to the mid-40s.

On New Year's Eve, the temperature won't get quite so cold, but there's a slight chance of showers before 1 a.m.

New Year's Day will be partly sunny and continuing to warm, with a high near 48 degrees. Temperatures may reach near 60 degrees by Tuesday, before another cold spell late next week.

Friday: A chance of flurries. Mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Breezy, with a west wind 11 to 16 mph increasing to 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 25. West wind 6 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 44. South wind 5 to 13 mph.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of showers before 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

New Year's Day: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 48. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 48. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
