Warhawk Lacrosse Ends Centreville Win Streak

Madison High school gets 13-10 victory Wednesday

Senior Kellen Schmitz scored a game-high three goals and added two assists to help the Madison Warhawks record a 13-10 boy’s lacrosse victory over the previously undefeated Centreville Wildcats on Wednesday evening at James Madison High School.

The Wildcats took an early 2 goal lead, capitalizing on a tough ride and failed clears by the Warhawks. The Warhawks came back with two goals by Schmitz, the first assisted by Junior Chris Albright (1 assist) and the second assisted by Nick Gabriel (2 goals, 1 assist). The first period ended with Centreville up by a score of 3-2.

The second period was strong for Madison with goals by Junior Ian Cooke (3 goals, 1 assist), Junior Kyle Mancini (1 goal), Junior Kyle Rowe (2 goals) and Senior Connor Strock (1 goal). The score was 6-3 Madison at the half.

Centreville went on a streak of their own to start the second half and tied the score with three goals in the first three minutes of the half. Madison responded with another goal from Ian Cooke followed by two tallies from Centreville’s Zack Sikora. Madison finished the period with scoring from Juniors Matt Arndt (1 goal), Nick Gabriel and Kyle Rowe. The third period ended with Madison leading by a score of 10-8, setting up an exciting finish.

The fourth period started with a goal from Madison’s Gabriel that was assisted by Senior Andrew Russiello. Centreville followed with two quick goals to make the score 11-10, Madison. Madison’s Schmitz scored again at 9:14 in the fourth and Cooke finished the scoring with a final goal at 3:31. Madison was able to kill the remaining time on the clock and win the game 13-10.

Key to the Warhawk’s win was success by Kyle Rowe and Connor Strock at the faceoff X against Centreville. Rowe won 16 of 21 and Strock won all 4 of his faceoffs.

Junior Goalie Matt Hayden had 9 saves for the Warhawks. Juniors Dusty Stahl, Jackson Cole and Kyle Mancini lead the Warhawks with two ground balls apiece. The Madison defense was lead by the trio of Senior Brandon Baker, Junior Nick Hoy and Sophomore Ben Headley.

The Warhawks return to action on Friday night, April 13, in a key Liberty District matchup against the Langley Saxons in McLean.
