Charcoal Ashes Cause Fire At Lake Ridge Home: Fire Department

A family of five was displaced but no one was injured when a fire broke out Friday morning at a Lake Ridge home.

LAKE RIDGE, VA — A fire that displaced a family of five in Lake Ridge Friday was caused by charcoal ashes, according to Prince William County Fire and Rescue.

Units responded to a townhouse in the 12900 block of Titania Way in Lake Ridge around 5:48 a.m. Friday. Firefighters quickly put out the blaze on the home's back deck. Residents had safely evacuated before fire department arrival. There were no reported injuries.

The fire caused moderate damage to the home and minor damage to an adjoining home. Investigators found the fire started on the rear deck and extended to the attic.

A building official deemed the home unsafe to occupy, displacing two adults and three children. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

The fire marshal's office determined the cause was the improper disposal of charcoal ashes. According to the fire marshal, residents should throw out ashes in a non-combustible container and not place them near combustibles in or near the home.
