WOODBRIDGE, VA — Prince William County officials held a groundbreaking last Friday for a road extension project that seeks to address congestion and improve convenience.

The Summit School Road project will add a new 0.8-mile segment on Summit School Road, connecting it with Telegraph Road and the Horner Road Commuter Lot. It will have four lanes, a median, five-foot sidewalk and shared-use path. In addition, 57 new parking spaces will be added to the Horner Road Commuter lot.

Officials believe the project will east congestion on Minnieville Road, a major route between mid-county to the eastern county.

"A lot of what we talked about here in the county over the last few years is traffic safety, meeting our need for human-centric [travel], as opposed to being auto-centric," said Occoquan District Supervisor Kenny Boddye at the groundbreaking. "This project will hit a lot of the things we need to do in this area, from what you see here today to a real hub of the Occoquan District and Prince William County."

The $40 million project received $38 million from the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority, which allocates regional transportation funds. The remaining $2 million is from the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission for the for the 57 commuter lot spaces.

"When people do not have to spend time in their cars, getting frustrated, that is time that they can on doing other things."
