WOODBRIDGE, VA — Long-term lane closures are coming to a road in the Woodbridge area as part of a project to address the bottlenecked Interstate 95 and Route 123 interchange.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says Occoquan Road (Route 906) will be reduced from two to one lanes in each direction between Hylton Avenue (Route 1209) and Devils Reach Road (Route 748). The lane closures start Monday and are expected to continue until late 2026.

Pedestrians on Occoquan Road are asked to be aware of sidewalk closures around the I-95 overpass and follow detour signs.

The extended lane closures will assist with utility relocation, storm drainage installation and the widening of the southbound I-95 overpass for the I-95 and Route 123 interchange improvements project. The interchange project will replace the northbound Route 123 loop ramp to southbound I-95 with a signalized left-turn to the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95 and widen the southbound Route 123 ramp to southbound I-95 from one to two lanes.

Other changes include moving the Route 123 and I-95 Express Lanes ramp intersection slightly south, realigning the southbound I-95 ramp to northbound Route 123, adding a shared-use path along northbound Route 123 from Annapolis Way to Devil's Reach Road, and widening and replacing the beams and deck of the southbound I-95 bridge over Occoquan Road.

Construction has begun on the project, and VDOT estimates completion on southbound I-95 and the bridge over Occoquan Road will happen in late 2027. The entire interchange project will be completed in late 2028.
