New Shelter Opening in Dumfries for Flood Victims

First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries will operate a shelter for an additional week.

  • Press Release from Prince William County:

The emergency shelter operated by the American Red Cross at the Dale City Recreation Center will close on Friday, September 16th at 5:00 p.m. However, those still seeking permanent housing and transitional housing will have another temporary emergency shelter available. The American Red Cross and First Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Dumfries, VA will operate an emergency shelter from September 16th through September 23rd.

Prince William County officials provided casework assistance to the people affected by the floods throughout the week at the Dale City Rec Center. They have identified much of the basic needs and services available to them, helped identify housing opportunities, and assisted in many people being placed in more permanent housing. However, the challenge of relocating and finding a new home can take time, and for those still without more permanent housing will have another week to do so.

“The American Red Cross has been a great partner with Prince William County, and we are thankful for First Mount Zion Baptist Church for offering to help,” said Chairman Corey A. Stewart. “When a disaster like this strikes, it truly requires the entire community to step up and offer assistance. The role of government is very limited, so it is the generosity of the people, businesses, and faith communities throughout Prince William County that will best provide the assistance these folks need.”
