Police: Over 1,000 Citations Issued During Street Smart Campaign

Police upped safety and public awareness program at the start of April.

Prince William County Police issued 1,294 citations during the the first week of April. 

The breakdown of the citations:

  • 669 citations to motorist for speeding
  • 88 violations involving operator’s licenses
  • 44 reckless driving citations
  • two citations for pedestrians walking in travel lanes
  • 12 citations for pedestrians for other violations

During April 1 through 7, officers concentrated on “driving behaviors that contribute to pedestrian and bicycle crashes with motor vehicles such as speeding, running red lights, running stop signs, and not using headlights at night or at any time when visibility is reduced.”

For pedestrians, they were “stopped if they crossed roadways at points other than at intersections as required by law. Intersections are designed to facilitate the safe crossing of pedestrians by the use of cross walks and traffic lights allowing greater visibility.”
