Route 123 Bridge Inspected For Structural Defects From Corrosive Grout

The bridge is one of about 36 bridges in 21 states that need to be inspected, the Federal Highway Administration said.

The Route 123 bridge is being inspected for possible structural defects from a potentially corrosive grout used in its construction, WTOP reported

The Woodrow Wilson Bridge is also being inspected, along with about three dozen bridges in 21 states, the Federal Highway Administration said.

The grout reportedly has an elevated level of chloride, which could cause the bridges to rust more quickly.

"The grout was used in both bridges, but officials maintain they are safe," WTOP reported.

"Chloride-contaminated grout was blamed in the collapse of a pedestrian walkway at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC in 2000, injuring more than 100 fans," the article reported.
