VDOT Construction on Route 123 and I-95 to Finish Saturday

The ramp will close on exit 160 but will reopen later this week.

The Route 123 South to I-95 South extended acceleration ramp construction in Woodbridge is expected to be finished and open to traffic by Saturday evening, June 11, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The extension of ramp’s acceleration lane will relieve a choke point in Woodbridge just south of the Gordon Blvd (Route 123). Once complete, this quarter-mile long acceleration lane will keep traffic moving smoothly while merging onto I-95 South and enhance the safety for motorists.

To complete the acceleration lane, the following closures will be in place:

1.    When:       11:30 p.m. Fri., June 10, to 6 p.m. Sat., June 11
What:        Single lane closure (Right lane I-95 southbound)
Where:      I-95 south, at Exit 160, Gordon Blvd. (Route 123)
       Why:         Milling and paving
       Police:       Onsite for motorist safety

2.    When:       11:30 p.m. Fri., June 10, to 6 p.m. Sat., June 11
What         Ramp closed (Detour: traffic will be directed to I-95 north, stay to the right for Gordon Blvd. (Rt. 123) north, then follow signs to I-95 south.)
Where:      Gordon Blvd. (Rt. 123) south, ramp to I-95 south
       Why:         Milling and paving
       Police:       Onsite for motorist safety

Motorists can expect minor delays on I-95 south through Saturday evening. To avoid congestion due to the lane closure on I-95, the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes will be open to all traffic from Friday evening until midnight Saturday.

An alternate route motorists may take to avoid the closure is the Route 1 exit (Exit 161) in Fairfax County, before crossing the Occoquan River, and follow Route 1 over the river, and turn right at the first traffic signal back to I-95.

In the case of inclement weather, these lane closures may be rescheduled.

The entire I-95 Widening project will be substantially complete by early July, saving motorists 10-20 minutes while traveling through this corridor during peak travel times. Crews will still be finishing up soundwalls and landscaping work until the fall but will be out of the travel lanes so there will be minor traffic impacts.
