Burglary, Car Theft Follow Woodbridge Man's Release From Jail

Fairfax County Police say the man burglarized a home and stole a car the same day he was released from jail.

BURKE, VA — A Woodbridge man is facing new charges after a burglary in Burke and car theft on the same day he was released from jail.

Fairfax County Police responded around 7:02 p.m. Tuesday to the 9500 block of Millgate Place in Burke for a burglary. A resident reported an unknown man in her home. Once she armed herself with a weapon, the man fled in a vehicle. Police found the vehicle nearby and arrested the suspect.

A police investigation found the suspect stole the vehicle from the Fairfax County Courthouse after being released from the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center earlier Tuesday. Fairfax County General District Court records show Derling Gustavo Hernandez, 28, of Woodbridge, was released on recognizance for May 9 charges of grand larceny (auto theft), petit larceny and eluding/disregarding police.

For Tuesday's offenses, Hernandez was charged with burglary, grand larceny-auto theft, destruction of property, credit card theft, and drunk in public. He was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and held without bond.

Hernandez faces an Aug. 5 hearing for most of May 9 and Tuesday's charges. A hearing for the drunk in public charge is scheduled for July 9.
