Bellevue police were busy on Monday, with two shooting investigations. This one involved a 16-year-old who is accused of shooting his 12-year-old brother in the face. The 12-year-old brother was taken to Harborview Medical Center for his serious injuries, and the 16-year-old, Adrian Flores Maldonado, was charged as an adult with attempted manslaughter because of the serious nature of the crime.
Investigators say that the teenager and the 12-year-old started wrestling during an argument over a video game at their home at the at 12th Place Condos in the 16200 block of NE 12th Ct. around 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, according to police. Maldonado pointed a semi-automatic handgun at his brother's face when it went off and struck the brother in the mouth, police said.
The older brother maintains that the shooting was accidental, and that he forgot that the gun was loaded when he pointed it at his brother, according to court documents. The court documents also say that Bellevue police say that Maldonado hid the gun before tending to his injured brother and that Maldonado said that he had ties to gangs and had purchased the gun illegally.
