Bellevue Vacancies Among Highest In State, According to U.S. Census

During the 2010 U.S. Census, about 9.7 percent of houses, apartments and condominiums were unoccupied, according to the U.S. Census.

Along with showing a 11.7 percent growth in Bellevue, the 2010 U.S. Census also showed Bellevue's vacancy rate rise over the previous decade, according to city officials.

According to the figures released Wednesday, 9.4 percent of housing units - apartments, condos and houses - in Bellevue were unoccupied durinng the 2010 U.S. Census. In 2000, the number of vacancies was about 5.3 percent of housing units in Bellevue.

Part of the reason behind the large number of vacancies was a huge growth in the number of housing units in downtown, which more than doubled the last decade, said Gwen Rousseau, a city official in the planning and community development department.

Bellevue had the third highest vacancy rate for Washington cities bigger than 10,000, she said.
