📰 News we're reading

1. Sunday listening session tackles trust, participation in local governance (myedmondsnews.com) — Edmonds residents joined three city councilmembers Sunday at the Edmonds Library to candidly discuss trust, public engagement, and big local issues like the Lynnwood wastewater plant expansion and city finances. Community volunteer Kevin Harris outlined his report arguing engagement in Edmonds is “broken,” prompting debate on culture, process, and leadership. Councilmembers pledged to carry this feedback into their Feb. 6 retreat.

2. City of Edmonds launches conservation campaign inspired by employee initiative (myedmondsnews.com) — Edmonds residents are being invited to join a new city conservation push by snapping photos while filling reusable bottles at any City of Edmonds water fountain for a chance to win a branded bottle. The campaign, inspired by a custodian’s discovery that an Edmonds Police Department fountain had saved nearly 20,000 plastic bottles, aims to spotlight everyday choices that cut local plastic waste.

3. Saturday's SVC Roundup: Women's basketball team beats Edmonds (thenewstribune.com) — College basketball fans in Edmonds saw Skagit Valley College sweep the Edmonds Tritons, with the women winning 73-62 and the men 91-58 in Northwest Athletic Conference North Region play. Both games were played in Edmonds, where Skagit Valley’s strong fourth quarter and second-half defense sealed the victories and kept the Cardinals unbeaten in region competition.

4. What's on the agenda for Washington's 2026 legislative session (seattleweekly.com) — Edmonds’ own Sen. Marko Liias will play a central role in shaping how Washington pays for major bridge, road, and ferry repairs as lawmakers confront a projected $12–16 billion budget shortfall. State leaders are debating a proposed millionaire’s income tax, bonding for transportation fixes, and whether climate-program dollars should be redirected to infrastructure and family tax credits in the 2026 session.
